Chow Gar Kung Fu (周家功夫) Demonstrations
at Barbagallo Motors Perth Function

(Demonstration videos below)

We were invited by Barbagallo Motors Perth to perform Chow Gar Kung Fu (周家功夫) at their special function on 21 September 2016.

When we first received the invitation, we were both excited and a little worried…

“Are we going to do our sets surrounded by their Roll Royce, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis?”

While the idea sounded cool, it wouldn’t be cool if we dented any of their luxury cars :-) . So after discussing with our Sifu, Professor Kit Po WONG, we selected a few sets that don’t require a lot of space. That means, no spear and other long weapons.

After deciding the sets, the next thing we needed to decide was whether to have music or not during the demonstrations.

On one hand, we thought it would be a bit “dry” without music. But on the other hand, we thought having drums, which are the traditional musical instrument for Kung Fu demonstrations, might be a bit too loud for a formal function like this.

We then decided to be creative! One of our members suggested we invite our friend, Amanda Ramsey, to perform Chinese harp (古箏). And she kindly accepted our invitation. (Thank you, Amanda!)

On that night, we arrived at the venue about half an hour earlier to get ready for the demonstrations. We did some stretching and practice in the dark, outside the building, we surely looked very suspicious like a syndicate of criminals ready to rob a bank. (Luckily, no security guards or police officers came after us :) )

While waiting to perform, we felt quite nervous as we worried what the stage looked like.

You see, usually before we performed, we would check out the stage. We’d find out how big the stage was … whether the floor was slippery … any light hanging down that we needed to avoid … and so on.

But this time, we didn’t get a chance to see the stage beforehand. We had to get on the stage and perform right away. That’s why some of us might be a bit nervous.

Finally, the time to perform arrived. First, we had Jimmy Ng and Trung Nguyen performing the Small Taming Tiger Sparring Set (周家拆小伏虎):

Followed by the Small Taming Tiger Form (周家小伏虎), performed by Ian Ramsay:

Then we had Anthony Winter performing the Double Broadsword Form (周家十字梅花雙刀):

Followed by the Wooden Post Form (周家柴樁), performed by Walter Zambotti:

Finally, Shin Fun Chung and David Ke performed the Stick Sparring Set (周家拆棍):

In the end, everything turned out really well. We all had a great time!
